Wellness & Preventive Care

Wellness care is the foundation of ensuring your feline family members continue to lead happy and healthy lives. By receiving routine wellness exams, we are able to assess your cats’ overall health status, screen for any underlying systemic diseases, and monitor chronic illnesses.

Wellness Exams

All cats, including healthy ones, should be examined at least once a year. This also falls in line with maintaining a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) with us, which is legally required to enable us to continue prescribing medications. Senior cats (7+ years old) should be examined at least every 6 months or more frequently as medically appropriate.

Preventive care, including vaccinations and parasite prevention, is also a large part of ensuring your cats are able to continue to thrive.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations enable protection against the spread of important infectious diseases, such as respiratory viruses (feline rhinotracheitits, calicivirus, and panleukopenia; FVRCP), feline leukemia (FeLV), and rabies. According to WA State law, all cats must also be kept up-to-date on rabies vaccinations, which is something we do annually. All of our vaccines are non-adjuvanted, offering the safest administration. All healthy cats should be vaccinated for rabies and FVRCP, while adult cats with high risk of exposure and all kittens should be vaccinated for FeLV.

Parasite Prevention

All cats, including fully indoor ones, are at risk of getting parasites. This includes fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, ear mites, and heartworms. It is not uncommon to track parasites indoors, and heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquitoes. In addition, some of them can affect humans, so it is important that all cats are on monthly prevention with a prescription medication all year round.

Diagnostics

Routine annual lab work is also essential to ensure your cats continue to be as healthy as they can be. This would allow us to monitor their overall systemic health regularly and be able to detect, diagnose and treat diseases in their early stages. We can also determine if your cat is at risk of developing a condition that may be prevented. Certain chronic conditions, such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hyperthyroidism, is not uncommon in older cats and preventive lab work would be very important to detect them early.

By developing the optimal wellness exam schedule for your cats based on their age, breed, health status, and other factors, we hope to provide the best support that we can for their health and well-being in all life stages.
